Rocker Jack White was pretty angry at the University of Oklahoma newspaper for printing his pre and post-show requests

Wikimedia Commons

You can call him a rock diva all you want, but Jack’s guacamole recipe does sounds pretty tasty.

What’s the point of being a celebrity if you can’t make up your own standards? The list of wacky pop/rock star demands backstage, known as “riders” is practically endless: Mariah Carey has reportedly demanded bottles of Cristal in her room, and Van Halen supposedly asks for bags of M&M's minus the brown ones. And now, according to the University of Oklahoma, we learn that pale rocker Jack White, loves his guacamole. The University of Oklahoma newspaper published the rider agreement between the college and Jack White’s crew, which listed— among other food demands like chicken wings, tortilla chips, and fresh strawberries — a secret recipe for guacamole (“Please don’t make it too early before it’s served. We’d love to have it around 5 p.m.”) The rider also contained the financial agreement of $80,000 for one show played at the university.

Other food demands on the rider listed a strict no-banana policy (“We don’t want to see bananas anywhere in the building”), and Jack White’s own post-show meal request of a New York strip steak cooked medium, with steamed vegetables on the side and no sauce. Naturally, Jack White was displeased with the leak of his personal requests. The Oklahoma Daily has written that the university has gotten “blackballed” due to the publishing snafu.

White’s manager has responded to this follow-up article in the Oklahoma Daily with his own letter, published by Spin Magazine: “The incidents with the OU Daily student newspaper…were unfortunate, unprofessional, and very unwelcoming….Contrary to what some believe, Jack doesn’t write the rider nor make demands about his favorite snacks that must be in his dressing room. We’re not even sure he likes guacamole but we do know that the folks who work hard to put on the show do enjoy it.”

Whether or not Jack likes guacamole, the recipe is supposedly really good. According to Buzzfeed, though, the guacamole was so chunky that it looked more like a salad than a dip.

Jack White Tour Rider LEAK

On February 2, 2015, Jack White played a show at University of Oklahoma. However, five days before the performance the school's newspaper published an article discussing how much the performance was costing the school and leaked a copy of White's tour rider and contract. In the rider, he has very specific demands of "FRESH-HOME-MADE GUACAMOLE", aged salami with a sharp knife, and a ban on bananas in the building stating, "this is a NO BANANA TOUR." Though Jack White's team requested it be taken down, the University responded that it was part of their free speech and it was public information. After the performance, University of Oklahoma was contacted by White's booking agency, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, and told that they have been blacklisted from having White and anyone on their roster to perform at the University. This led to White writing an open letter addressing the situation and everyone's involvement in the case. Check out some of the interesting articles involving this case and even a video of Jack White's now Famous Leaked Guacamole recipe.

Discussion Questions and Topics

What is the purpose of a rider?

Why do artists make specific requests like fresh guacamole, a steak cooked medium, or no bananas?

Who's typically paying for the items requested on a rider when the show is sold out, and the artist had a "versus" deal?

Who's typically paying for those expenses if the show has not sold well and the artist had a "versus" deal?

Was William Morris Endeavor Entertainment fair about banning all artists from their roster performing at this university ?

Did the booking agency and Jack White respond in the best way?

Was it worth it for the school to leak Jack White's rider?

What's the most interesting request you've ever seen on a rider?

Based on the article outlining the expenses of the show and the financial deal outlined in the contract, how much would the University have profited if they sold tickets at $65 rather than $25?

Jack White unveils interactive ‘three-in-one’ video for ‘That Black Bat Licorice’ – watch

Jack White has unveiled a “three-in-one” video for his new single ‘That Black Bat Licorice’.

The interactive clip, streaming below, features a live action video directed by White himself, an animated version directed by James Blagden, as well as a “headbang” edition directed by Brad Holland. Watch all three by toggling the keys in the embed below.

White recently posted an open letter addressing news of a tour rider that was published in early February ahead of a show at The University Of Oklahoma’s McCasland Field House.

The rider – a list of requests for a venue to supply to a touring artist and their crew – attracted some ridicule. Specific demands included the presence of a guacamole recipe which venues must follow, and the presence of lines such as “This is a NO BANANA TOUR. (Seriously.) We don’t want to see bananas anywhere in the building.”

In the letter, White asserted that he actually asks for nothing on the rider, and that all items are for his band and crew. He also claimed that the infamous guacamole recipe is not his, but is his tour manager’s joke, and that the banana ban may be due to a member of the party being allergic to the fruit.

He wrote: “I know I could ask for lots of things but I actually don’t ask for ANYTHING. I take with me what I need, and that ain’t much. Anything on the rider is for the band and the crew. This “guacamole recipe” is my hilarious tour manager’s inside joke with the local promoters, it’s his recipe, not mine. It’s just something to break up the boredom, seeing who can make it best. Though I wouldn’t know because I’ve never had it. I can’t even make Kool Aid let alone cook any real food enough to have a “recipe.” Sorry, I don’t have that talent.”

The rider appeared online before White and his band appeared at the institution, and was leaked by the university newspaper The Oklahoma Daily. In his letter, White said he’s a staunch believer in freedom of speech and free information, but he expressed surprise that the contract was published, saying “…never in my 20 years of playing shows has my contract and tour rider been published in the paper that I recall.”

Jack White is currently touring his 2014 album ‘Lazaretto’ around America. He recently shared an audio recording of his Madison Square Garden concert in New York, the singer’s first at the venue since he performed there with The White Stripes in 2007. It saw White perform a 23-song set that included work from his two solo records, as well as songs from The White Stripes and The Raconteurs.

The Artist Who Asked For A Gun, And Other Crazy Backstage Riders

Historically, part of the fun of being a musician is the ability ― usually within reason, sometimes not ― to do whatever you want. Enter the contract rider, which, while detailing technical sound and lighting requirements an artist needs the venue to provide, may also include specific hospitality requests. Candy. Drinks. Seating. Room temperature. Some of these get very specific ― last year, the University of Oklahoma leaked Jack White’s rider that (absurdly) requested homemade guacamole prepared according to a very specific recipe and asked that no bananas be “anywhere in the building.”

We asked artists playing New York’s Panorama Music Festival this weekend to share the craziest rider requests they’ve seen so far ― with or without naming names. (Of course, someone asked for a gun.)

Here they are, in no particular order.

The Julie Ruin heard about a pinball machine.

“I love that Ryan Adams travels with his own pinball machine and there has to be a place for it in every backstage!”

JDH & Dave P knew a musician who wanted their M&Ms separated by color.

“M&M’s separated by color, clean socks, stamped postcards, cartons of cigarettes, you name it.”

Flosstradamus was there when Dillon Francis asked for a gun.

“Dillon Francis asked for a gun once and it was fulfilled in Wisconsin while we were on tour together. We ended up using it in the venue. Bad idea.” ― Curt Cameruci

Grace Potter wanted a blow-up doll.

“There’s a bunch. I won’t name names, but, yeah, a blow-up doll. And I will name names, because it was me. Yeah, we wanted to get a blow-up doll for ― it was somebody’s birthday. We wanted to have it set up, and we had to have the venue prep it for us because the birthday was in Alabama, and you couldn’t get blow-up dolls in Alabama, so you had to get it in a different city, I think.”

Recipe Summary

  • 2 cups warm milk (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • ¼ cup margarine, melted
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages instant yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour, or as needed

In a large bowl, stir together the milk, margarine, warm water, sugar and yeast. Let stand for about 5 minutes.

Mix in the salt, and gradually stir in the flour until you have a soft dough. Divide into 25 pieces, and form into balls. Place on baking sheets so they are 2 to 3 inches apart. Let rise for 20 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Bake the rolls for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Cool slightly, then split them in half horizontally to fill with your favorite burgers.

The 32 most ridiculous things musicians have demanded in their dressing rooms

Ever wonder what it's like to hang out backstage with your favorite musicians?

Thanks to nifty little documents known as tour riders, you don't have to wonder anymore.

Broadly speaking, tour riders outline all the terms that a venue must meet when an artist comes to give a performance. They generally include each artist's detailed demands for food, decorations, and other personal touches in their dressing rooms. Most give a surprisingly detailed snapshot of the artist's private backstage space.

But as you might expect, some celeb requests can get pretty exorbitant — even downright weird. We combed through dozens of leaked tour riders published on the website The Smoking Gun. H ere's a look at some truly ridiculous requests made on the riders of 32 artists across the industry.

What are the soft food and mechanical soft food diets?

The soft food diet is one that includes foods that are easy to chew and swallow and excludes foods with a hard texture. With careful planning, it is still possible to eat a tasty, balanced diet from a variety of soft foods.

The mechanical soft food diet is another name for the diet, and refers to using equipment, such as blenders or food processors, to make food into a smooth puree.

In this article, we take a look at the foods to include and those to avoid when following a soft food diet.

Share on Pinterest The soft food diet, which includes tofu, may help people who have dental problems or are recovering from surgery.

There are many situations where people are advised to follow a soft food diet:

Following surgery

Doctors may recommend that people who have had surgery to the mouth, head, neck, or stomach follow a soft food diet for a period following surgery.

Examples of surgery that may require a person to eat a soft food diet afterward include gastrectomy, where a surgeon removes all or part of the stomach, and bariatric surgery, which is an operation to reduce someone’s weight.

Cancer treatment

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can make the digestive tract sore and inflamed, a condition known as mucositis. If someone is experiencing mucositis, they might benefit from a soft food diet.

Difficulty swallowing

The soft food diet may be appropriate for people who find it difficult to chew or swallow. This condition is called dysphagia.

For people with significant dysphagia, who are unable to eat tough foods safely, a doctor or dietitian might prescribe a texture-modified diet . In this diet, users alter the texture of foods to reduce the need to chew. They may achieve this by mashing and pureeing foods.

A texture-modified diet is similar to the soft food diet, and a doctor or dietitian may recommend it to people who may be at risk of getting food stuck in the throat or windpipe.

Doctors will assess people with dysphagia and will make appropriate dietary recommendations depending on individual needs.

The range of foods and textures offered depends on the severity of the dysphagia. Individuals should discuss options with a doctor or other professional, such as a speech and language therapist who specializes in helping people who have difficulty swallowing.

Dental problems

A soft food diet may be appropriate following dental implant or tooth extraction, such as wisdom tooth removal.

Following a procedure, it is essential to follow dietary recommendations from the dentist to avoid infections and other dental problems.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They can become loose or ill-fitting over time, which makes it difficult to bite and chew properly. Hard or sharp foods can dislodge the dentures, causing them to become unstable in the mouth.

The soft food diet might be more suitable for adults with dentures as it prevents food getting stuck and causing any damage.

The soft food diet does not have to be restrictive. It is crucial to continue to eat a wide variety of nutritious foods, especially if recovering from surgery.

People following a soft food diet should try to eat regular meals including a variety of foods from the main food groups:

Carbohydrates to provide energy and fiber

  • porridge oats
  • whole grain biscuits with lots of milk
  • mashed potatoes
  • white or brown bread
  • boiled pasta or rice with sauce

Protein-rich foods for growth and repair

  • minced meats cooked in stews or casseroles
  • fish without bones that are poached, steamed, or boiled
  • tinned fish, such as tuna or salmon without bones
  • eggs that are scrambled, poached, boiled, and fried
  • beans, lentils, and pulses, including baked beans
  • hummus
  • tofu

Dairy and alternatives that contain calcium

  • milk and milkshakes
  • yogurt
  • crème fraiche
  • cheese sauce
  • cottage cheese

Fruit and vegetables for vitamins, minerals, and fiber

  • peeled, cooked, and mashed vegetables, such as carrots, butternut squash, and parsnips
  • ripe, soft fruits, such as bananas, pears, and berries
  • stewed fruit or compote
  • fruit juice and smoothies
  • avocado
  • tinned fruit in juice, mashed if necessary

People should be sure to remove the skins from all vegetable and fruit before eating.

Followers of the soft food diet can use sauces to help soften foods. Options include:
