Get a Whiff Of the World's First Food-Scented Photos

Wouldn't it be nice to take a food photo that also captured the aromas? You may be able to do that soon. Zhu Jingxuan, a junior at the Fashion & Art Design Institute of Donghua University in China, won the "most fun" award from Sony's annual Student Design Workshop for her "food printer." Her device essentially inhales the scents of food and releases similar fragrance onto the postcard as it prints. Thus, Zhu created the world's first food-scent camera.

The invention has three parts: a camera, a printer, and the "smell extractor" &mdash an aroma sensor also called an electronic nose. The "nose" analyzes the smell in front of it and simulates the scents using different aroma inks that are stored inside the printer. The printer then uses the fragrant inks to create the image. The hope is that when traveling, photographers (and foodies) can capture the visual image of the food and its fragrance to enhance the sharing experience when you show the photos to friends and family.

While the food printer isn't available to consumers at the moment, something like it could be available to consumers in the future. A spokesperson from Sony told Wired, "We think this idea is very interesting. In China many people love to take photos of delicious food and upload them to social networking services for family and friends to see. This design can help record the memory of the event too. Recording the smell of food is very interesting because you get good and bad smells, it will make communication with friends more amusing."

Would you purchase a food printer that recorded the smells of your meals?

How to Make Beautiful DIY Scented Candles

We are a reader supported blog and this page may contain affiliate links. When you buy something or sign-up through our links we may earn a small commission. All opinions in this article are the author's alone.

We just love burning scented candles in our house and whether you put them on the living room, bathroom or your bedroom, they can help calm your mind after a stressful day. This is the reason they are great gifts.

If you cannot find the scent you are looking for that suits the recipient, then you can just make your own. In this tutorial, we will create scented candles, specifically vanilla and coffee bean scented candle. You just need a few things:

  • Old glassware or vase
  • Vanilla extract or vanilla scent melts
  • Soy candle wax
  • Wick
  • Coffee beans

Coffee beans and vanilla extract can change depending on the flavor you want to make. For instance, if you want to have cinnamon scented candles, have cinnamon essential oils and cinnamon sticks.

If you have the materials needed to achieve your desired scent, then you can get started. First, melt the wax. Pour about two cups of soy candle wax on the bowl. Then, insert the vanilla scent melts. Heat the mixture in the microwave for 45 seconds to melt down the scent melts.

While waiting for the vanilla cubes to melt, get the glass and wick. Use glue or tape to secure the wick on the glass. Make sure the wick is glued properly on the bottom so it won&rsquot come off easily once you pour in the wax. Cut the excess if there is any.

Get the mixture from the microwave and stir to melt. Keep stirring until the candle wax is dissolved entirely. You can add vanilla extract for the scent at this point. If you think the wax is not enough, you can pour additional soy wax to the mixture. Make sure to mix it well. It will take you about 4-5 minutes of stirring for everything to melt. The mixture gradually turns into liquid form.

Then, pour the wax on your glass. Be careful that the wick doesn’t come off. Put coffee beans in while it is still in liquid form. Once the wax turns white, you’ll know the wax is getting firm. Hold the wick into the center while you wait for the wax to dry.

So, that&rsquos it! Light up your candle and let the scent fill the room. You now have scented candles that you can wrap as gifts for friends and family.

There you have it

I do hope you enjoyed this list of homemade potpourri recipes.

Don’t be shy in trying out these recipes since their fail-proof. You won’t need to worry about messing up this tutorial especially if you’re known to mess up before.

Also, if I had to choose between dried or simmering potpourri, I’d say simmering on the stove tends to give a stronger scent but you do have to remember to always top it off with water when it starts to go low. But it’s still amazing overall.

Leave a comment below and tell us which potpourri is your go-to or which one you plan to make this holiday? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Disney Parks' New Food-Scented Air Fresheners

Heading to Disney World with the kids this August? Maybe you'll bring home a few souvenirs like a figurine, mug, and those signature mouse ears. Oh, and in case your car smells, you can pick up one of Disney Park's newest pieces of merchandise: food-court-scented air fresheners.

The food is a big part of visiting Orlando's Disney World, which is equivalent to the size of the city of San Francisco. More than 1.8 million pounds of turkey drumsticks are consumed each year between the four parks: Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot. That was the inspiration behind one of these new fresheners: turkey.

The new fresheners are the brainchild of the merchandising group that is behind all the trinkets and toys sold at the theme parks. Steven Miller, Merchandise Communcations Manager, posted on the Disney Parks blog about the power food has in triggering memories. One being the bakery on Disney's Main Street, U.S.A. As such, the Merchandise group has decided to create a way to take home those aromas and put them in your car.

If you're looking to bring home one of the four fresheners &mdash candy apple, waffle, turkey leg, and ice cream bars &mdash will be available beginning August at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

Do you have a favorite smell from Disney World? Would you want to take it home?

How Does Fat Washing Work?Top

Fat washing is the process of infusing the flavors of tasty fats into alcohol. It was pioneered by the crew at PDT, wd-50, and Tailor restaurants and bars, and it is a relatively easy process. First combine a flavorful liquid fat with the alcohol you want to infuse. Shake them together and let them sit for about an hour then freeze the mixture until the fat separates. Strain it out and you are all set.

This process works with oil, butter, bacon fat, and most any other fat. To strain the mixture, freeze it until the fat solidifies then strain it using cheesecloth or a coffee filter. Some fats like olive oil won't freeze well and are best removed using a separatory funnel.

It would be a good idea to prepare a complete meal, with a light appetizer, a tasty main course and a delicious dessert. It’s better to make it all light, so that you both can try all three courses and you don’t want to feel like a blown up balloon after you’ve spent all day preparing a romantic meal.

If you need some help with the recipes, check out our article on 5 Best Recipes for a Romantic Dinner for two and you will certainly find something that will suit you. Remember that complicated things aren’t always the best, after all, no dessert can top fresh strawberries dipped in melted chocolate, right?

23 Food-Scented Candles Your Mom Will Genuinely Love

It's a last-minute gift that will make the whole kitchen smell amazing&mdashand you don't have to cook a thing.

Get that Sunday Funday feeling every day of the week with this pancake-scented candle. Bonus: It's made in a food-safe glass jar that can be washed and reused afterward.

Can't surprise Mom with a trip to Italy? This is the next best thing (provided you treat her to a homemade Italian dinner, too). It'll remind you of Sorrento lemons, cane sugar and lemon zest&mdashjust like the classic liqueur.

There's no better scent to waft through the room during an epic The Great British Bake Off binge-watching sesh. It'll make you ready for tea time in no time.

How can you resist a ceramic pineapple?! You just can't, especially when it smells like fresh melon.

If Joanna Gaines is your Mom's spirit animal, she probably needs this candle in her life, pronto. It's the latest from her store, Magnolia, and it's perfect for anyone who's not into overly sweet scents. It's a mix of cucumber, thyme and celery.

It's one sophisticated scent for one sophisticated lady.

Yankee Candle's newest collection will bring out Mom's inner Parrothead&mdashor at least inspire a few stories about that spring break when she went HAM on margs and . well, maybe you'll want to put on earmuffs before she finishes that thought.

Pay homage to your mom's "no talkee before coffee" policy with a candle that smells like freshly brewed java.

While the candle's name sounds intense, the scent itself is much mellower. It's a blend of tropical fruits, sugared oranges, lemons and limes that will make you think of sipping drinks with tiny umbrellas in them and living on island time.

Celebs regularly rave about Diptyque's scents, and for good reason: They're fresh without being overpowering&mdashespecially this mimosa scent. (Fair warning, though: This one's a splurge.)

If you don't like overly flowery or powerful scents, you'll enjoy this crisp blend of melon, pineapple, apricot and cucumber.

It's a classic for a reason. And that reason is it makes your entire home smell like your 9th birthday. What sweet, sweet nostalgia.

Talk about Southern Charm! This candle, from Reese Witherspoon's company, Draper James, makes it smell like you live next to an orange grove&mdasheven if your view is more grimy highway than bucolic countryside.

You don't have to have grown up in the South to appreciate this brown sugar-scented treat. It'll make your whole house smell like this cobbler-cake&mdashso much so that you should probably attach the recipe (or, better yet, make it) as part of your gift.

Pink prosecco and rose petals? We'll raise a mimosa to that.

PSLs aren't just for fall anymore&mdashat least, the scent isn't (and that's what people really love about them, isn't it?).

It's as close as you can get to bottling the smell of walking into a Krispy Kreme when the "hot and fresh" sign is on.

This should be the official scent of spring. It's a blend of black tea, lemon and honey&mdashjust like Momma used to make.

Gold accents are so in right now, but what's even more delightful is that warm, toasted coconut scent.

Pumpkin obsessives, take note: While Yankee Candle only sells this scent in stores seasonally, it's available year-round online (score!).

This light, refreshing scent will make your whole house smell like you just came back from a trip to the farmer's market&mdasheven if the only trip you're overdue to make is one to take out the trash. (Thankfully, this candle hides those sins remarkably.)
